Welcome to the August Issue, Volume 28, Issue 3 of Cider Press Review.
In this issue of Cider Press Review, depending on the tilt of our gaze, time folds, expands, and at times consumes—pushing us to reflect on life-defining moments in retrospect and contemplate life still unfurling. Peter Filkins stuns us with “In Good Time,” as he encapsulates the blur of living with, “a haze of days toward waiting sleep / to keep alive upright the pulse // of dawn a wash of waking color / amid the verdant inchoate need.” In “Wingspan,” L.N. Valenzuela sharpens the cusping moment of life ascending: “sunburns sinking into saltwater—no one ever reaches the mainland // in our dreams. Our bodies sweat rust as we wake up, the moon hanging / herself like a heavy church gong. Nightly, we trace each other’s scapulas / before the prayer finishes; I hope we see how the light strikes every muscle.” And in “Summer Day,” Kimberly Ann Priest shows us what it is to awaken in a time of need: “from other mothering duties to gird up her loins, / meet her daughter at the door, rip off a shirt, and destroy the dark / destroyer with finely-tuned rage, Michigan / shaking off dawn’s wheeze, / reviving her urge to blister, relentlessly, with heat.”
