I walk the open palm of hills where my friend
will check his hives. On this dry summer day
all is a soft palette of ochre, olive, lavender.
He speaks of the land, the uneven roads
built by the ancient Romans one stone
at a time, only a cart wide. Oh, the then
of time. I am not with ancient cobbles
but drawn by the clear here, the stretch
of sea blue, the sky’s lighter hue,
rising scents of wild thyme, rosemary
from our feet brushing passed,
the glistening heat, soft breezes,
till the reaching of land’s tapestry
pulls me from my small earthen
spot, from my urge to name—
to open wider, wider.
