at first sight
by Jay Brecker

what is it
about rain
arriving
—but not yet

as ginkgoes
—golden-leafed—
in autumn
startle dark
sorrowing
skies as you

dressed in red
on a night
years ago

pass under
a lintel
startle me—

lightning in
a bird’s heart
