(always when I want
to live I cry out)
by Halina Poswiatowska
translated by Sarah Luczaj

always when I want to live I cry out
when life is leaving me
I cling to him
I say—life
don’t go yet

his warm hand in my hand
my mouth at his ear
I whisper

life
—as if life were a lover
who wants to leave—

I hang on to his neck
I cry out

if you leave me I’ll die
