In the recycled paper bag in my hand
I carry a flag of many stripes
in a variety of colors
with a few, small, golden stars,
a crescent moon, an eagle, a bear
and a scabbard to hold
a tiny broom
My bag holds other things—
a ball of twine, cellophane wrapped
pack of rubber bands, Krazy glue,
Post-its and a Velcro strap
No people in my bag
yet, but soon they’ll arrive
in a variety of colors, stripes,
crescent-shaped eyes alive
with golden stars, using
the small broom to sweep it all clean
