David Radavich

Burnt Offering
by David Radavich

Beginning of the divine:
first tearful slice, skin parting
from each other
like lovers,

sizzling pallor,
gradual darkening,
then release

beyond belief.

Doesn’t matter what
formula follows—
meat, potatoes, pasta, parmesan—

sacrifice leads to
victory, transformation.

Without this white dome,

the world’s myriad ingredients
kneel in their juices.

When mother and now
wife commence the ritual, I warm
with expectation, awaiting

another coming.

Childhood and aging
marry in time, the primitive

wakens, aromas spread
through the house
like angels

casting out death.
