we played in the car
by catherine grossman

when the older kids
were at school

up said my mother
down I replied

oldest said my mother
youngest

flower she put forth
dandelion

loud she said
sshh I scolded

unfair she offered
my brother

freedom
ice cream

I think she invented
the game to make

a word enough
