Ballad with Neck Stepping
by Ellery Beck

Can you hear that, that sing me
sideways
music, those harps
as they seethe through strained

teeth? Ask her for a symphony
and she’ll sound something
out, that step on me, I dare you, that act

as if you don’t know
kind of sound. She’ll find some cushion
for her sole in the side

of your neck. Can you feel that—
the perfectly rhythmed pulse pressing
back against boot? This beauty, she’s built

it in that tension against skin, she’s baring
her calcium. Listen closer, she’s begging
for a harmony in those hums.
